Laser technology plays an important role in the German economy. 40% of global sales of light sources and 20% of laser material processing systems come from Germany. For lasers used in manufacturing, German companies are at the forefront.

In order to maintain and consolidate these advantages, the German Federal Agency for Educational Research (BMBF) was established Digital Photon Production (DPP) research base, with annual funding of 2 million Euros for 15 consecutive years. The DPP research base establishes a long-term systematic cooperation model between the university and Frauhof and 28 partners from enterprises. As for the specific content, the DPP research base focuses on researching new methods and basic physical effects using lasers as new tools, especially future topics such as energy, health, security, information and communication technology.
Aachen University of Technology, Frauhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) and three other companies collaborated on three projects: researching nanophotonic products of new VCSEL light sources; direct photonic products for further development of additional manufacturing methods; and Femto photonic products. The goal is to further develop ultra-fast laser manufacturing methods.
The project of cutting ultra-fast laser Femto photonic products with ultra-fast lasers was launched in October 2014 and is expected to last five years. Led by Aachen University of Technology, the goal is to better understand the basic science involved in modern material processing. Research has focused on materials with large electronic band gaps, in other words, materials with high transparency, such as glass, sapphire, and diamond.
Ultrafast lasers represent optical processing systems that generate new functions on materials or devices. However, the basic process of the interaction between ultrashort laser pulses and the absorption effect of transparent materials is still not fully understood. Many of the materials studied in this project that are relevant to future applications are transparent, which also means that they can only be processed using complex laser processes. The core of the joint project is basic scientific analysis, simulation, and elaboration of the interaction between laser radiation and transparent materials.
