In this International Year of Optical Technology, the United Nations and the photonics industry have jointly announced the important role of optical technology in our lives. Laser Focus World plays a leading role in this. In 1965, 50 years ago, lasers were not as important as imagined.
In 1975, Ford Motor Company made a bold move: using high-power CO2 lasers to weld stamping parts together to form a new "1976 Turin" chassis. The car was written off as the infamous oil embargo caused damage to the U.S. auto industry, and large-scale manufacturing of laser welding was forced to be delayed.
Back in 1985, when BMW used a 5kw CO2 laser to weld a new three-series roof, it was perhaps the world's first body welding application. For another decade, Audi used solid-state lasers to weld the roof of the new A3 series. Similarly, in 1996, BMW used a CO2 laser welding robot to weld the roof of the new 5 Series.
After another ten years, the auto industry uses lasers as a feasible welding tool and assembly equipment: Volvo uses solid-state laser robots to weld the galvanized roof panels of the V70; General Motors uses laser welding to customize the 2002 Buick body side panels; Chrysler installed the first North American remote laser welding system for Jeep Freedom backdoor spot welding.
For the past 10 years, Peugeot / Citroen has welded doors and C-pillars of Peugeot 3008 and 5008 with 6 kW disc lasers, Mercedes has used disc lasers to weld doors and side walls of the E series; Chrysler uses semiconductor lasers Welded 300C door and side wall. Fiber lasers have also appeared in automotive assembly chassis, such as the 2014 cruiser's aluminum alloy chassis, while Volkswagen uses fiber laser seam stepper to weld the body of golf.

When the new platform was introduced, almost all hundreds of automotive laser applications appeared, and laser welding was an alternative to traditional welding methods. Volkswagen's new platform will allow components to be standardized in 29 plants. Toyota also has a standardized platform, and the two auto giants compete for first place. Toyota's laser spiral welding, first used on the 2013 Lexus IS, can seal weld three different locations in less than a second. For me, the ten-year development of photonics is the right time for the automotive industry.
